When Avalon, California was first being settled the developer George Shatto called upon his sister-in-law, Etta Whitney, to name the town. She chose the name Avalon through a reference to one of Alfred, Lord Tennyson's poems "Idylls of the King" about the legend of King Arthur. The term Avalon means "brightest gem of the ocean" and that is how Whitney viewed this precious town. The Avalon Bookcase has its very named steeped in literary tradition, allowing for its perfect utilization as an entity for storing these great literary inspirations.
